Princess Debate

I found this online and had to share it immediately. It pretty much sums up how I fee about Disney Princesses. Admittedly, I'm a hypocrite: even though I won't let Addison watch the movies I totally let her dress up like them... Click, or double click, the image to make it larger and actually readable. The only thing this is missing is Tinkerbell and with a quote summing up her sorry body image issues and her terribly bratty attitude.




I would like to note that I grew up watching Disney movies and seemed to turn out ok... but my girls are YEARS away from being allowed to partake in actual movie viewing.

And while I'm on the Disney movie subject, let's ruffle a few more feathers and discuss the lack of a mother figure in EVERY SINGLE DISNEY MOVIE, except Lion King (but his dad is brutally killed before his eyes), and Sleeping Beauty (but her parents have a spell put on her for the better portion of her life.) What's up with that???

Disney is not known for it's roll model development skills that's for sure. The female characters that we grew up with where taken from classic folk tales and changed into codependent , shallow, self absorbed cartoons. It's sad and I don't have a daughter (yet) but I don't want to raise my son thinking that's the kind of girl/women that is desirable.
I remember reading the real "little mermaid" by Hans Christian Anderson as a older kid and it's completely different than the cartoon. All of the characters that you mentioned are Disney creations not original Disney characters. The original stories of the characters are very different from what Disney made them into.
Does Addie ask to watch those movies??

She doesn't really know about them to ask about them. I used to let them watch Peter Pan, but then was so disturbed but Tink's attitude and dress code (She show's her buns, albeit covered, when she bends over) that I took the movie away. I brought it back out not too long ago, but nope, still not ready for that. I didn't even know about there being real stories before the Disney Stories!

Yes all of the characters you mentioned are from stories centuries old. Classic authors "The Brother Grimm," Charles Perrault, Hans Christian Anderson just to name a few. Some really amazing authors that would probably be devastated to see what their stories have been turned into. I love Peter Pan and I don't know if it's Disney but I just got Isaac Charlotte's Web (He loved it). You should definitely look into some of those authors I think you would like them.

I've seen this recently and totaly agree. I feel caught in between though, not willfully though, with TIm working for Disney. We get free passes, so why not go? I get a big discount at their store, and just bought them new pj's. So while I' hate promoting them in my house, sometimes it's jsut cheapest/easiest. Although, I told Kami she coudn't pick Jasmine or Ariel because of their immodesty. lol
We've let them watch Little Mermaid and Cinderella, but I took Little Mermaid away right away. Outright disobedience to her father, immodesty, sexuality... the list goes on.
This stuff is so hard to get away from too. Emblems on everthying!

So much to say about the Disney Princess Franchise. It's a disaster. No positive maternal influence, no emphasis on what's truly important in life, and too much of the sexiness and beauty stuff. Berlyn used to watch the movies, then I stopped showing them to her, but she's still infatuated with every single princess. I just keep reminding myself that's it's a passing phase. And it's my job to teach her how to be a strong, confident woman of God. And hopefully, over time, I think the princess glow will fade.
But it's always fun to dress up, and be girlie.

In a Nut Shell...

Saturday afternoon, 2pm, got home from Costco and thought I might be going into labor. Troy woke up from his nap at 3:30, sensed what was going on and was not too happy about it at all. Thinking it was pretty early, but not want wanting to take any chances, we left for the hospital a bit before 4 o'clock Yep, too early. Walked the halls for an hour which produced more of these... Which felt like this... And at 8:42pm they led to this... We are so thrilled to add a precious baby girl to our family We love you Mia Joy! (7lbs 2oz, 18.5" long)

Crafty Me

I'm pretty excited because I'm not crafty, at all, but when I saw this idea on my new favorite crafty blog I got all giddy because I thought, "I can do that!" and so I did. And since my kids ARE crafty, go figure, I had all the stuff to make them on hand - yippee! All I had to do was buy the goodies that make the wings, which only cost me a dollar (thank you Dollar Tree!). I put them in the kid's little Easter buckets. I hope they like them as much I do. :-)
